aspiring artist has to have a starting point. In this clip, Byard
recounts his
experiences
as a young musician in Philadelphia.

New
jazz
forms are constantly being born, the result of constant collaboration
among musicians. Here, Byard tells of a time in the late 1960s when he
ate, drank and slept jazz with other famous artists such as Sun Ra and
Jimmy Garrison.

Byard
plays one of his newest
compositions entitled "Pan-Africa", which
will be featured on an album slated for release in Summer
2005.
