    After settling down in the ballroom and introductions, Ethel began to discuss her early career as a member of a gospel group, the Dumont Gospel Singers.  Click here to hear her talk about her experiences with the Dumont Gospel Singers. Although singing with this group played a large role throughout her life and her career Ethel began her career singing in her church choir. Click here for Ethel's description of her early beginnings.  While participating in the Dumont Gospel Singers, Ethel had the opportunity to tour many cities around the country. While on the road in Chicago, Ethel encountered her mentor, Mahalia Jackson. Through our conversation with Ethel, it became clear that Mahalia Jackson had a profound influence on Ethel's life to the point that Mahalia actually encouraged Ethel to continue singing and pursuing her dreams.
