Research Team Uses Nanopores to Observe Protein Structures

A research team headed by Physics and Astronomy Professor Marija Drndić is using a new method of nanopore gene sequencing to observe protein structures.

Existing methods for this kind of analysis are labor-intensive and typically entail the collection of large quantities of the protein. They also often require modifying the protein, which limits these methods’ usefulness for understanding the protein’s behavior in its natural state. The Penn researchers’ technique allows for the study of individual proteins without modifying them. Samples taken from a single individual could be analyzed this way, opening applications for disease diagnostics and research.

Drndić's collaborators include David Niedzwiecki, a postdoctoral researcher in her lab, and Chemistry Professor Jeffery G. Saven. Their research was published in the journal ACS Nano.
