Website

Troels Nørgaard Skadhauge received his Ph.D. in 2023 from the Department of Political Science at the University of Pennsylvania. His research interests include democratization, de-democratization, and political economy.

His dissertation traces the ideological development of Swedish social democracy from 1881-1948. While today social democracy is associated with a particular form of welfare capitalism, it began as a movement to transform capitalism. Over time and in response to changing political and economic conditions, the Swedish social democrats revised their ideological outlook to become more and more accepting of the capitalist economy. Drawing on archival sources from the Swedish Labor Movement Archive, the dissertation analyzes this ideological development, focusing on struggles over the meaning of socialism.

In addition to his work on social democracy, Troels has written about contemporary populism and its relation to the crisis of democracy (Forthcoming at Polity).
