Our Motto: The SASgov motto "Docemus et Discimus" is Latin, meaning "We teach and we learn."

Our Logo: The SASgov arms are red (gules), blue (azure) and white (argent). This follows the colors used in the Shield of the University of Pennsylvania, and denotes our link to the University. The heraldic description of the SASgov shield: "In the chief an embattled line, with three chess rooks; in the ground a falcon close."

The embattled line was chosen for the SASgov shield as representing the obstacle that our degree programs sometimes seem to be, but which we will ultimately conquer. The charges on the shield also have specific meanings: 3 chess rooks - protection and strength, as well as strategic planning. The use of three chess rooks is representative of the three major areas of study in SAS - Physical Sciences, Social Sciences, and Humanities - as well as the three types of degrees offered by the School - PhD, Research Masters, and Professional Masters. The falcon close denotes someone eager or hot in the pursuit of an object much desired, and who will not rest until the objective is achieved.
