Course Description:

This course is designed to prepare students for careers in art. It focuses on the many writing demands that artists face:  exhibiting, promoting, representing, documenting, researching. Students will learn how to write artist statements, resumes, press releases, exhibitions, and documentation, as well as acquire some familiarity with the basics of contracts and market representatives.  Focused on advancing the kinds of writing skills and knowledge you'll need as an artist, class time will be variously devoted to lecture, collaboration, student presentations, and guest speakers. Students must be prepared to engage in collaborative activities in the class and in the community. About the instructor: Dr. Kate Kramer, a Senior Fellow in Fine Arts at the Critical Writing Program at Penn, has served as a curator and director of public and private art institutions, as well as an executive director of a humanities research institute. She has also been a professor of art history, teaching courses on art history and material culture.
