Intensive Elementary Arabic I and II
No prior knowledge of Arabic is needed to register in this course.
Emphasis will be on all four language skills: speaking, listening,
reading, and writing. Students will be expected to give classroom
presentations and to write short essays in Arabic. Evaluation will be
both achievement-based and proficiency-based. The course is
proficiency-based, implying that all activities within the course are
aimed at placing the learner in the context of the native-speaking
environment from the very beginning. We anticipate that by the end of
this course students will range in proficiency from Novice High to
Intermediate Low on the ACTFL scale which means from 'incipient
survival' to 'full' survival' in the native-speaking environment. The
course will be offered using animation and several virtual modes of
discussion. Students will be able at the end of this course to
introduce themselves, express feelings, emotions and basic needs. At
the end of the class for most of the day, students will spend a daily
hour of indoor or outdoor activities either with their instructor or
visiting native students at Upenn. They are expected to spend four and a half
hours in class, another hour of immersion after class in
addition to a bi-weekly field trip. This course will require from three
to four hours a day to complete the class assignments and to do
preparation for next day class.
