Course Description:

This course will focus on three of the most celebrated artists of the Italian Renaissance and examine the complex relationship between their artworks and the historical conditions in which those works were produced. Focusing on these figures, this course will interrogate the modern myths regarding artistic genius and the aesthetic autonomy of the Renaissance work of art. Course discussions will address the interpretation of individual works of art, the artists' careers, their interactions and rivalries, as well as their relationships with patrons and other artists.
