Course Description:

This course aims to provide students with a critical understanding of journalism. It combines theoretical perspectives on the making of news with primary source material produced by and about members of the news media. Students will read theoretical material on journalism alongside articles and columns appearing in the daily and weekly press and on television, news broadcasts, webcasts, blogs, interviews with journalists, trade articles, and professional reviews. Particular attention, using current examples, will be paid to understanding current upheavals in journalism, an industry and profession in the midst of great transition, and to learning how past scholarship helps understand the evolving field.
