Course Description: 

In this introductory course on the history of American music, we will focus on the historical context(s), conditions and mixture of influences that gave rise to the regional variation of major genres of American music from early colonial music of European migrants to slave spirituals, gospel music, blues, folk, country, jazz, rock, and rap, the development of music scenes, the role of innovators and stars, the music industry, changing social attitudes of music, and, of course, music itself.
