Course Description:

“Emotions determine the quality of our lives,” writes Paul Ekman, whose research on the expression of emotion was the basis for the Fox television series Lie to Me. Is it possible, then, to change our lives by changing our emotional lives? How can we go about doing that, and would we want to? In this class, we will explore recent psychological research on emotions and consider ways of using this information to enrich and improve our own emotional lives. Using Ekman's text Emotions Revealed as our guide, some of the topics we will consider are the functions of specific emotions, including disgust, sadness, and joy; the ways emotions are involved in mental disorders; how to identify one’s own emotional triggers; and how to read other people’s facial expressions.

Fulfills the Writing Requirement for CAS, WH, EAS, NUR.  Does not count toward the writing requirement for LPS.
