Course Description
This course will introduce students to the world and work of William Shakespeare. While reading a range of his most famous plays, we will consider the social, religious, political, and commercial conditions that shaped the popular performance culture of the English Renaissance. We will become familiar with the language and format of late-sixteenth/early-seventeenth century drama, discuss the nature of literary authenticity and canonicity, and analyze the ways in which these theatrical texts have been reimagined over time, including on film. Together, we will read five plays: As You Like It, Macbeth, The Merchant of Venice, Romeo and Juliet, and The Tempest. Assignments will include weekly written responses and a final paper.
