Penn Summer provides a flexible opportunity for University employees to pursue professional development, dive into new academic pursuits, or prepare for graduate coursework, all while maximizing tuition benefits. We offer a diverse array of courses across disciplines, many offered in the evenings or in fully online format to accommodate work schedules, commutes, and busy lives. With three summer sessions, Penn Summer allows professionals to individualize their pursuits and select an educational path that best meets their academic needs.
We offer more than 300 courses in a variety of disciplines within the School of Arts and Sciences, The Wharton School, and the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences. Summer courses are small, averaging ten to fifteen students, and are comprised of traditional Penn students as well as visiting and international students from other colleges and universities. All courses are taught by Penn instructors and are offered in the day, evening, or online to ensure maximum flexibility. The academic credits completed through Penn Summer will appear on an official University of Pennsylvania transcript. Most Penn courses are worth 1 course unit (CU) which translates into 3 or 4 credit hours at most other institutions, though some science courses may count as 1.5 CUs due to a rigorous lab component. Penn employees are registered as visiting students, and as such are permitted to register for undergraduate level courses (numbered 499 or below) in any of our three summer sessions.
