Lady in the Dark (1941) is a landmark (but seldom performed) musical that united three of America’s great dramatists in an exploration of the still-new theatrical topic of psychoanalysis. The principal character, Liza Elliott, embarks on a course of therapy to discover why she can’t make up her mind.
The show broke new ground with its form: conventional songs are placed in the context of three miniature "operas", each representing one of Liza’s dream regressions—her childhood, her career, and a circus fantasy—through which she discovers herself. When Lady in the Dark opened on Broadway, the NEW YORK TIMES praised its innovation, glamour and melodic strength (the score includes such standards as "My Ship" and "The Saga of Jenny"), and many critics still rank it as one of the ten best musicals ever written.
Lady in the Dark has superb roles for both male and female singing actors, and includes some non-singing parts.
