Ayako Kano is Associate Professor in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, and also serves as Undergraduate Chair of its Asian Section at the University of Pennsylvania. Born in Tokyo, Japan, and raised in Frankfurt, New York, and Yokohama, Professor Kano received her B.A. from Keio University, Tokyo, and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Cornell University in 1995.
Professor Kano's research focuses on the intersection of gender, performance, and politics, as well as on Japanese cultural history of the late 19th to early 20th century. Publications include _Acting Like a Woman in Japan: Theater, Gender, and Nationalism_ (New York: Palgrave, 2001), and numerous journal articles as well as translations in both English and Japanese.
Professor Kano is faculty member of the Theater Arts Program and Women's Studies Program, as well as a member of the Graduate Groups in History and in Folklore and Folklife.
