David Fox is a Lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania in Theatre Arts and English, Director of the Penn Reading Project and New Student Orientation. He holds degrees from UCLA School of Theatre, Film and Television, and has taught and developed educational programs in the arts and humanities at Penn, UCLA, and The University of Southern California. His areas of expertise are modern American theatre, musical theatre and opera, and theatre directing.
He lectures nationally for arts groups including the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Opera, and others. He currently serves as theatre critic for the Philadelphia City Paper,and has written for Opera Quarterly, Kurt Weill Quarterly, Pulse Magazine and others. Twenty-six of his essays appear in the current edition of the International Dictionary of Opera (St. James Press). In addition, he has designed music and sound for a number of regional theatres throughout the country, including the Williamstown Theatre Festival, the Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut, and Room for Theatre in Los Angeles.
For Penn’s Theatre Arts program, he has directed Curse of the Starving Class, Cabaret, The Lady In Question, The Skin of Our Teeth, Elektra-Kabaret, Laughing Wild, Screaming Queens,The Women (with colleague Rose Malague), and Lady in the Dark.
