DIGITAL MANIPULATION OR DIGITAL MUTILATION?
As the ability to manipulate photographic images has increased in recent decades, the portrayal of the female body in much of modern media has moved toward an increasingly unnatural depiction of reality. The proliferation of these highly edited, virtually plastic photographs in the fashion and advertising industries impresses an unrealistic expectation of femininity on the general public, which leads to potentially disastrous consequences for the individual and society. Analyzing digitally manipulated images through their artistic method, psychological pressures, and social influence reveals that the over-manipulation of photographic images in the media has distorted our perception of beauty into a concept that is unachievable.
