Tenure-track position in Gender and Women's Studies, starting Fall 2008. Assistant Professor (Ph.D.) preferred; Instructor (ABD) or Associate Professor possible. We expect this faculty member to be placed in a department congruent with her/his specialization, and to be a member of the Gender and Women's Studies Committee. Grinnell College is a highly selective undergraduate liberal arts college. The College's curriculum is founded on a strong advising system and close student-faculty interaction, with few college-wide requirements beyond the completion of a major. The Gender and Women's Studies Concentration is an interdisciplinary program that offers basic courses in the field of Gender and Women's Studies and draws on affiliated courses offered throughout the College curriculum. The teaching load of five courses over two semesters will include three basic courses for the Concentration: an Introduction to Gender and Women's Studies; Theory in Gender and Women's Studies; and the Senior Seminar for concentrators. The successful candidate will also teach core courses in her/his area of specialization; every few years one course will be Tutorial (a writing/critical thinking course for first-year students, oriented toward a special topic). In this search, the College wishes to reinforce its commitment to increase faculty diversity, recognizing that to provide a diverse learning environment is to prepare students for personal and professional success in an increasingly multicultural society. Qualifications: A Ph.D. with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Women's Studies and/or extensive research in Women's Studies is required at the time of appointment. Eligible candidates must exhibit the potential to establish a strong record of scholarly achievement. Preferred qualifications include previous experience working with diverse student populations, teaching experience in Women's Studies, knowledge of multicultural issues, and interest in electronic course delivery. A commitment to the transdisciplinary, multicultural mission of the program is vital.
Responsibilities: Primary responsibilities will be teaching graduate seminars in areas of specialization, and teaching may also include Introduction to Women's Studies for the undergraduate core curriculum. Other duties include directing graduate student research, advising students, supervising graduate teaching assistants, service on graduate committees, participation on program and university committees, and active participation in program development, particularly on the graduate level. Scholarly productivity in the form of research publications and presentations is expected.
The Women's Studies Program offers the M.A. degree, a Graduate Certificate, and an undergraduate minor. Approximately 1200 undergraduate students per year take courses in the program for University core curriculum credit. Currently there are approximately thirty-five masters students enrolled in the graduate program, which offers courses on U.S. women of colors, feminist/womanist theories, epistemologies, feminist pedagogies, ethnographic research methods, and other topics. The Race, Gender & Public Policy Initiative at the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs is offering one year post-doctoral fellowships for researchers working at the intersection of race, gender and public policy.
The University of Minnesota's Humphrey Institute is a national leader in the study of race and public policy and the examination of gender and public policy. We are widely recognized for our role in examining public issues and shaping public policy at the local, state, national, and international levels. The newly formed initiative on Race, Gender and Public Policy explores new frontiers of knowledge at the intersection of race, gender and public policy. The program promotes scholarship that benefits from cross-disciplinary discussion and contributes to the development of new ideas and tools for both policy arenas.
The goals of the RGPP initiative include:
·Encouraging emerging scholars to engage in collaborative and interdisciplinary research.
·Cultivating the field of intersectionality studies by supporting applied public policy research.
·Convening researchers, public policymakers, and community leaders through seminars, workshops, and conferences.
·Broadening the public policy curriculum by developing exciting new courses addressing issues of race, gender, and inequality across disciplines and subject areas.
