Information on Sarah's Ancestry
Sarah's Ancestry
Nachmias (Nahmias or Namias) is a Sephardic name and a Hellenized version
of the biblical name "Nehemia" (God will console); it was
originally a first name. The Sephardim are Jews whose ancestors were
expelled from Spain during the Inquisition. Most of them moved to Eastern
Europe. My paternal grandfather was from Bulgaria, and my paternal
grandmother was from Turkey.
Thimann is my mother's maiden name. Her paternal
grandfather was
originally a Polish Jew, but when he moved to England as a young man, he
converted to Christianity. My maternal grandmother's ancestors were
English and Scottish as far back as the Middle Ages.
