Here I am inside the vestibule of El Kasneh (or, the "Treasury") in Petra. Petra was a great city of the Nabatean Arabs built in the first centuries B.C./A.D. and conquered by the Romans in 106 A.D. The greatest remains are the royal tombs such as the one you see here. Although only "rediscovered" by European travelers in the early 19th century, this area was inhabited by Bedouins for centuries until the Jordanian government removed them just a few years ago in the interests of tourism. It was also the site of a gunbattle between T.E. Lawrence ("of Arabia") and the Turks during WWI.
