Splendor of Rome(Anc. Hist. 120 / Classical Studies 120).
Rome's physical development in its historical and social context. Includes a survey of Rome's archaeologists, from Cola di Rienzo to present, and a discussion of the evidence for Rome's monuments: archaeological remains; ancient art and coins; the Forma Urbis Romae; ancient literary descriptions; the works of later artists and engravers such as Piranesi; and modern computerized reconstructions.
Wonders of the Ancient World(Ancient History 118 / History 118).
Archaeological and historical survey of the great civilizations of the Mediterranean and Middle East. Explores canonical and non-canonical "wonders" as a means of explaining various social aspects of the civilizations that created them (Step Pyramid of Djoser at left).
History of Rome(Ancient History 027).
Survey course, from Romulus to Constantine. My version of the course includes sessions examining the Bronze Age and Villanovan antecedents of Rome, and Rome's place in the greater culture of Latium down to the 5th c. B.C.E.
Ancient Greece(Ancient History 026).
Survey course, from the Paleolithic era to Alexander the Great.
