Mid-Term Exam: Essay Question
The following question will count as 50% of your Mid-Term Exam grade. It
is being provided ahead of time so that you can study, go over class notes and
Ellwood and Zein, think about what you are going to say and organize your
thoughts. Of course during the exam itself you will not be allowed to use the
textbook or notes.
Essay Question
Create your own religion. It can be humorous. Feel free to have fun in the process.
As you design it think about what scholars might say about the religion and how
they might analyze it in terms of Definition of Religion, Historical Development of
Religion, Psychology, Myth, Ritual and Symbols, Sociology, Beliefs, Ethics and
Women's Issues. For your essay pretend that you are a religious studies scholar
analyzing this new religion in terms of these subjects. (Hint: Obviously the
purpose of this essay is to show how much you really know and understand the
material we've covered on these concepts. So design your religion in such a way
that you can show this with your analysis).
