1. Directional Complements:

Simple directional complement—(verb + directional
verbs):
When a directional verbs such as “上,下,进,出,回,过,起,开,到,来,去”
is placed after another verb, it indicates the direction in which a person or
object moves.
Example: 他 走上 楼。 ŕ He walks upstairs.
他 走下 楼。 ŕ He walks downstairs.
他 走进 教室。 ŕ He walks in a classroom.
他 走出 教室。 ŕ He walks out of a classroom.
他 走过 教室。 ŕ He walks pass the classroom.
他 走回 教室。 ŕ He walks back to a classroom.
我 走到 教室。 ŕ I walk to the classroom.
他 拿起 课本。 ŕ He takes up a textbook.
把 课本 拿开。 ŕ Take away the textbook!
他 买来 一瓶酒。-> He bought and brought back a bottle of wine.
☆ Compound directional complement— (verb + directional verb + 来or去):
来 and去 can also be placed after上,下,进,出,回,过,起,开,到 to make a compound directional complement. The following are all the possible combinations of compound directional complements:
verb + 上来 下来 进来 出来 回来 过来 起来
上去 下去 进去 出去 回去 过去
NOTE: When there is an object in a compound directional complement sentence, 来 and 去 are placed at the end of the sentence; but when there is a 了 in the sentence, 了 should be placed after 来 and 去.

Example: 我 走上 楼 来。 我 走上 楼 来 了。
老师 走进 教室 来。 老师 走进 教室 来 了。
妈妈 买回 晚饭 来。 妈妈 买回 晚饭 来 了。
老师 让 我们 把 功课 带回 家 去。
老师 让 我们 坐回 位子 去。
老师 让 我们 站起 来。
2. When 次is used to indicate the frequency of actions, 次 usually follows objects:
Verb + X 次 + Object
Example: 我每天给男朋友 打 三次 电话。
医生说我每天得 吃 四次 药。
NOTE: When the sentences are in the past, 了should be placed right after verbs.
上午 我打了 两次 电话。
昨天 我吃了 三次 药。
昨天 我上了 好几次 厕所。
However, when the object is a pronoun, it must be placed before the frequency:
昨天 我找了 他 两次。
3. A对B + (过敏/有用/有帮助/好): A is (allergic / useful / helpful / nice) to B
Example: 我妈妈 对 狗 过敏。
练习生词 对 我 有帮助。
这本书 对 学中文 很有用。
我男朋友 对 我 真好。
4. Verb/Adjective + 死了: to exaggerate the extremity (stronger than 极了).
Example: 我一天没吃东西,我饿死了。
爸爸送了我一辆新车,我高兴死了。
我吃坏了,我肚子疼死了。
今年费城的冬天冷死了。
5. 越来越 + adjective: to become more and more …
Example: 你的妹妹 越来越 漂亮了。
弟弟 长得 越来越 高了。
不看医生,病 会 越来越 重。
6. 再说…: moreover…
Example: 我不想看电影。再说,我也没钱。
我没时间看医生。再说,我上次生病没看医生,最后也好了。
7. 要不然: otherwise
你得去看病,要不然病会越来越重。
你得多穿一件衣服,要不然你会冷死。
8. 是不是/对不对?: Is it right?
机票是你的,对不对/是不是?
你一定没买健康保险,是不是/对不对?
