I am a graduate student in the Department of
Classical Studies at the University
of
Pennsylvania. I am in my sixth year and wrapping up my
dissertation and preparing to enter the job market. Fortunately,
I
have a very supportive group of professors
and colleagues who
make it as painless as possible. My dissertation examines how
prose authors of Classical Greece categorized literary productions, and
particularly how they bounded off poetry as something different.
Beyond the dissertation, my primary interests in the
field are archaic Greek poetry
and Homer, genres (what they are and how they are constructed), Greek
particles, and modern interpretations of
ancient texts and stories.
I also like to dabble in linguistics, particularly comparative and
historical linguistics, functional grammar, and narrative
analysis.
I grew up in Houston, TX but have since lived in Santa Fe, San
Francisco, Nashville, New York City, Austin and Philadelphia. I
have been playing classical piano for most of my life, although I never
find time to play as much as I'd like to. I have also been
developing other
hobbies in the last few years, including cooking, sewing and middle
eastern dance.
