Tomoko Takami is a Lecturer in Foreign Languages at the University of Pennsylvania. She teaches Japanese courses in the Japanese Language Program, the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations.

Ms. Takami has become involved in the teaching of Japanese language courses in many programs on campus since 1995.  In addition to her full-time teaching in the Department of East Asian Languages and Civilizations, she teaches Japanese for Professions (Japanese for Professional Purposes) at Penn Language Center.  She has also worked for The Joseph H. Lauder Institute of Management and International Studies, where she taught pre-term mini-immersion Japanese courses and assisted the Japanese summer immersion programs for Wharton MBA/Lauder students.

Her research interests include Sociolinguistics, Second Language Acquisition, and Language for Specific Purposes (especially Language for Professional Purposes).  She is currently working on curriculum/material development for integrating culture and intercultural competence components with business language instruction and has received various grants for this project.  She has presented her research at numerous conferences and published several papers. She is a coordinator for Japanese for Specific Purposes Special Interest Group in the Association of Teachers of Japanese.
