2007 Rita S. Gallin Award for the Best Graduate Student Paper WID
Women and International Development (WID), a program of the Center for Gender in Global
Context (GenCen), invite you to submit a paper for its annual graduate student paper
competition. The paper should hav! e been written within the past year, should be
approximately 2! 0 double -spaced pages in length, and should focus on issues related to
women, gender, international development, and globalization.
Papers will be reviewed by a faculty committee, and the award will be made at the first
annual GenCen Open House in January 2008. The winning paper will be peer reviewed for
publication in the WID Working Papers Series, and its author will receive a $200.00
prize.
Papers should be submitted to the WID office via e-mail (in Word or WordPerfect) or by mail (both hard copy and on diskette/CD). The WID e-mail is: gencen@msu.edu. Please indicate you are submitting the paper for the competition and be sure to include a contact phone number and e-mail address. The deadline is Friday, December 14, 2007.
African Culture Week 2007 - Taste of Africa

The MSU African Culture week events begin on Tuesday, November 6, 2007 with the M! ain
event "Carnival D'Afrique" culminating on Saturday, November 10, 2007 at McDonald Middle
School in East Lansing, Michigan. More detail to follow as the events gets closer. Please

Operation Crossroads, Inc.
Operation Crossroads Africa is an U.S.-based, private voluntary organization that sponsors cross-cultural exchanges and small-scale development projects in Africa. For seven wee! ks each summer, teams of eight to ten participants, a Crossroads leader and local volunteers join with a local community on a project that involves local people and participants working together. In 2008, Crossroads will sponsor projects in several African countries. Crossroads extends an invitation for you to be a participant or Crossroads leader for summer 2008. 2007/2008 AAU Small Grants for Dissertations/Theses Programme

The Association of African Universities (AAU) is pleased to announce the 2007/2008
edition of its Small Grants for Dissertations/Theses Programme under the sponsorship of
the African Capacity Building Foundation (ACBF). The Programme is aimed at facilitating
timely completion of research theses and dissertations, and improving the quality of
research within its member institutions.
The Programme is ! open to graduate students, researchers, and lecturers registered in
the nominating universities, and who are preparing dissertations/theses in fields of study
that contribute to development, with special preference for the following themes: 1).
Economics and related disciplines, especially entrepreneurship in Africa; 2). Engineering
and information technology; 3). Gender and HIV/AIDS; 4). Agriculture, Food Security and
related disciplines.
AAU member institutions in good standing on the payment of their subscriptions, are
invited to nominate a maximum of TWO (2) candidates each, at least one of who must be
female. At most, one award will be made in any nominating institution. Applications should
therefore indicate the degree of priority it attaches to each of its two nominees.
Nominations must include the following:
Research Proposal: An original/innovative research proposal of not more than 10
typewritten pages clearly outlining the Problem Stat! ement, Literature Review,
Methodology, Expected Results, a Wor! k Plan a nd Timetable; Status Report: Report
indicating progress so far made on the thesis/dissertation, what remains to be done and
the additional resources required to complete the project; Budget: A detailed budget with
expenses clearly linked to specific phases of the proposed activity. The budget should
not exceed US $ 2000 for PhD; US $ 1500 for M.A./MSc. etc.
Apart from trips for fieldwork in the country in which the research is actually conducted, travel abroad is not funded. The deadline for receipt of nominations is November 23, 2007. Faculty, Ethnic Studies - Colorado
The Center for Applied Studies in American Ethnicity (CASAE) at Colorado State
University invites applications for a senior Associate or Full Professor, 9-month tenured
position in Ethnic Studies. The starting date is August 15, 2008. Required qualifications
include a doctorate degree, senior Associate or Full Professor rank, and demonstrated
excellence in all of research/scholarship in Ethnic Studies, teaching/advising, and
service/outreach. The preferred candidate will have built relationships wit! h

African History - Augustana College, Illinois
Augustana College invites applications for a full-time tenure track appointment, rank
open, in African history beginning in the 2008-2009 academic year. All periods of history,
areas of specialization, and regions of Africa will be considered, although sub-Saharan
Africa is preferred.
Applicants can anticipat! e being directly involved in Augustana's "Study Abroad in
Africa" experience, and in the development of an interdisciplinary African Studies
Program. Initially, candidates will also be invited to teach courses in Augustana's
innovative Liberal Studies curriculum and/or an area of secondary interest to be specified
by the candidate. A PhD in hand at the time of appointment and demonstrated commitment to
creative and effective undergraduate teaching as well as scholarly achievement is
expected. Interviewing of candidates will begin at the October Association for African
Studies meetings and, if necessary, continue in January at the American Historical
Association conference.
