NSF Merit Review Criteria Information

In 2012, the National Science Foundation released revisions to the merit review criteria of Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts.

These two review criteria guide the panel of evaluators as they review and evaluate all NSF proposals.

For researchers, the Intellectual Merit and Broader Impacts criteria serve as guidelines for the structure and content of all NSF proposals.

Within each review criterion, there are five Merit Review Elements to be considered.

We recommend reviewing the brief NSF PowerPoint presentation or the NSF Factsheet for Reviews for an introduction to the criteria changes.
