Philadelphia Community Groups

If you would like to submit an event for a Penn volunteer to attend (like a Science Fair as a judge or a panel as a speaker), click here to visit our volunteer request page.

Community organizations are an essential part of the SOI scope. As researchers contact us for support developing Broader Impacts for their research, we connect with groups who may benefit from involvement in a project.

“Broader Impacts” describes activities that connect scientific research happening in the lab with the potential for real-world benefits to society and contribute to the achievement of specific, desired societal outcomes.

These Broader Impacts may be accomplished through:

  • the research itself,
  • activities directly related to the project, or
  • activities supported by, but complementary to the project.

Examples of previous researcher-community partnerships include a Penn scientist visiting a 7th grade classroom to teach hands-on biochemistry activities. Read more about it here.
