Kristen Coakley is the Assistant Director of the Science Outreach Initiative, and works with graduate students as they navigate the incorporation of outreach activities into their scientific career training and fellowship applications.

She discovered her love of conveying the broader implications of scientific research to the general public and an interest of how science education can be implemented most effectively by participating in programs that provided teaching experiences in San Francisco public schools and serving as a docent at the California Academy of Sciences.

In 2012, Kristen completed a Mirzayan Science and Technology Policy Fellowship at the National Academies, researching the policy dialogue surrounding integrated STEM education. Most recently, she served as Program Coordinator for the Perry Initiative, a non-profit focused on introducing high school girls to careers in orthopaedic surgery and engineering.  Kristen holds degrees in biomedical sciences (Ph.D., UCSF) and biological sciences (A.B., Mount Holyoke College).
