09/12 Joseph Farrell (Penn): "Classics in China: Reflections on a First Visit"

Thursday, 12 September 2019 - 4:30  PM

Cohen Hall 402, University of Pennsylvania

The study of ancient Greek and Latin Classics in the People's Republic of China has grown considerably and has become more visible internationally during recent years. Much of this visibility takes the form of students who come from China for a period of study in American or European universities. Now a number of programs have been bringing scholars to China in order to increase communication between programs there and in other countries. In this talk, I will report on my experiences as a visiting fellow in the Guangqi International Center for Scholars of the Shanghai Normal University during March 2019. This involved a series of a dozen lectures at universities and research centers in five cities. The programs encountered in each place were quite different from one another in respect of individual history, institutional position, and scientific focus, but they all share certain opportunities and challenges as they look to the future. What I will do is to give my impressions of this experience and invite contributions from anyone else who may have their own experiences or questions to share.
