ARTH335 - TOPICS IN ISLAMIC ART
Section 301 - SEM
Utilizing digital tools for humanities has been a growing trend. Analysis of large groups of data to detect patterns has proven fruitful for discovering and understanding artisanal habits, individual hands and regional variations. This seminar will examine 12th c. manuscripts, ceramic, metalwork and bone artifacts from Iran deposited at the Penn Museum in order to trace habits of hand and eye, and thus reconstruct aspects of visual production and material culture. Students should have some digital skills and expect to develop more, all the while learning about the visual culture of medieval Iran. The final product for the seminar will be a website with further e-publication.
