It's easy to conduct a Skype call in most classrooms.  As an instructor, you can use Skype to bring in a guest speaker, or can use it for times when you can't make it to class and need to teach from a remote location.  

Use the form at the bottom of this page to request a Skype call in your classroom. 

To get started please take note of a few things:

• This information is intended for instructors of SAS classes.  We will not accept requests for remote connection from students.
• Instructors, please check with your department chair or program coordinator to see if there are any policies concerning appropriate use of technology for teaching remotely.
• This service allows you to make a remote connection to your classroom; it assumes that your students are present in the classroom.  It will not address situations where you need to make a conference call in disparate locations. • In order to use this service you or your guest need to have a Skype Account (if you don't have one please go to www.skype.com to join & download Skype for free).  Please create your Skype account before submitting this form so you can include your user name on the form.
• If possible, you or your guest should make a test call prior to the start of your class to verify that your equipment is set up properly.  Click here for instructions on how to make a test call in Skype
• Normal procedure is that we will call you or your guest at your Skype address about  5-10 minutes before the start of class.  Please be prepared to answer a call at that time.
• When you are in a Skype call, you can transmit video from your camera or you can show whatever is on your computer screen (you can't show both at the same time with a free Skype account).  Click here for more information about screen sharing in Skype. 
• The quality of the Skype call will depend on the quality of your internet connection.  It usually performs well from home broadband connections on cable or FiOS connections, but you may experience occasional break-ups or other interruptions.

 In your classroom at Penn we will set up a camera and microphone at the front of the room.  Please note:

• Typically the camera & mic will be in a fixed position.  We may not be able to provide a person to aim the camera during the class to zoom in or focus on individual students.  
• Typically you will see a wide view of the classroom, but it's possible that not every student will be visible.
• Because the microphone is at the front of the room, students in the back may need to speak up or move toward the front of the room so you can hear them.
• If we can not have a technician stay in the room during your call, we will try to identify a student in the class who can help reconnect the Skype call if it is interrupted.
