Here's how authorized users can connect to the SAS vLab

See a list of courses authorized to use the SAS vLab

Go to http://sas.desktop.upenn.edu and select your preferred connection method

VMware Horizon HTML Access

This is the simplest way to connect.  Click HTML Access to start

  1. On the login screen enter your PennKey username and password.  Make sure KITE is selected on the bottom row, then click Login

  2. For many users, this will log you in and you can proceed to step 3.  If you get an error, you will need to reset your PennKey password in order to login
    1. Go to https://weblogin.pennkey.upenn.edu/changeexpiredpassword
    2. Complete PennKey password reset process.  You can reset it to be the same as before.  You don't necessarily have to change your password
    3. I know this process seems ridiculous.  I wish it weren't necessary, but it is.
    4. Once you have reset your PennKey password return to http://sas.desktop.upenn.edu    Login with your PennKey username and password, and KITE selected as the domain
  3. Click the SAS vLab icon to launch your virtual machine and use it as you would a regular lab PC
  4. IMPORTANT:  You cannot save files or settings on the vLab PC.  So, be sure to save your work to Google Drive, Canvas or some other cloud storage system
  5. If you accidentally close the browser, you can reconnect within 15 minutes and resume your session.  But after being disconnected for 15 minutes, you session will be terminated and any unsaved work lost

The VMware Horizon Client

  • The Horizon Client is a small program you can install on your Mac, Window or Linux computer or mobile device. It provides more functionality than the HTML access, but is a little more complicated to use
  • Enhanced functionality includes the ability to access USB devices on your local computer (including thumb drives) and support for multiple monitors
  1. Visit https://sas.desktop.upenn.edu and click  Horzon Client.
  2. That takes you to the Horizon Client Download page where you can select the correct version for your device
  3. When you click through to the download page for your specific device, look for the Documentation link for details on how to use the Horizon Client
  4. When you run the client for the first time, you'll be prompted to add a new server.  Click the box for adding a server connection and enter sas.desktop.upenn.edu then click Connect
  5. Enter your PennKey username and your password.  Make sure KITE is selected as the domain, then click Login
  6. For many users, this will log you in and you can proceed to step 7.
    4. Once you have reset your PennKey password return to Horizon Client.  Login with your PennKey username and password, and KITE selected as the domain
  7. On the next screen click the SAS vLab icon to launch your virtual machine and use it as you would a regular lab PC
  8. You cannot save files or settings on the vLab PC.  So, be sure to save your work to Google Drive, Canvas or some other cloud storage system
  9. If you accidentally close the client, you can reconnect within 15 minutes and resume your session.  But after being disconnected for 15 minutes, you session will be terminated and any unsaved work lost
