Welcome to the Department of Earth and Environmental Science
We are a highly interdisciplinary department with outstanding research programs across a variety of fields, including geology, geophysics, geomorphology, mineralogy, geochemistry, paleobiology, paleontology, microbiology, soil science, ocean and atmospheric science, water science, andenvironmental health science. Faculty and students are addressing fundamental questions about the Earth and the processes that affect our environment and our lives. Our graduate students have access to world-class faculty with strong ties to other departments, universities, research centers, and museums. We offer competitive Ph.D. fellowship packages, which allow our students to focus entirely on their research. Teaching opportunities exist for candidates wishing to develop educational skills. The department has an excellent track record in placing its Ph.D. graduates in academic institutions.
The University of Pennsylvania is located in the City of Philadelphia, a culturally diverse and pulsating metropolis within easy reach of other prominent higher-education organizations along the East Coast.
I encourage you to contact myself or other faculty in the department if you are interested in learning more about our unparalleled research environment.
The Graduate Group collaborates closely in research and graduate training with colleagues in the Biology Department, the Museum of Archeology and Anthropology, and the Laboratory for Research on the Structure of Materials at Penn. We also have long standing collaborations with the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, the National Museum of Natural History of the Smithsonian Institution, the Stroud Water Resource Center, and the International Institute of Tropical Forestry, Luquillo LTER program in Puerto Rico and the Luquillo LCZO.
