ELP instructors use teaching methods that encourage students to use English for real situations inside and outside of the classroom. They have completed coursework at the graduate level in TESOL, Applied Linguistics, and related fields, and some have received, or are working on, their doctoral degrees and other graduate degrees (such as MBAs).

They are actively involved in conducting research, writing textbooks, publishing articles, presenting papers or workshops at conferences, and serving as officers in local and national professional organizations. Several ELP members have also held appointments at the Graduate School of Education of the University of Pennsylvania and at other accredited colleges and universities, where they have taught courses at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
