This talk explores the pivotal role of software engineers within China’s techno-developmental regime. As China’s internet-related sectors expand, software engineers have emerged as critical players, building the infrastructure that underpins both digital governance and economic growth. The talk delves into the dual status of these engineers as both highly valued professionals and subjects of intense labor exploitation. Drawing on in-depth interviews and online ethnography conducted between 2019 and 2021, the research reveals the stratified experiences of software engineers based on class origin, educational background, and employment within different tiers of tech firms.
Open to all, informal lunch provided.
