Externally-supported Leaves

Faculty are encouraged to seek funding for externally-supported leaves from foundations and government agencies. These grants for faculty leaves bring prestige to the faculty member and the School, and they can supplement sabbaticals that the University supports and Dean's leaves provided by the School. Faculty must always coordinate with their department chairs whenever they apply for external funding for a leave, so that the departments can plan their curricula and the School can plan for the budgetary implications of the leaves. In situations where fellowships do not offer enough funding to cover full salary and benefits, and where the fellowship is deemed by the School to be prestigious, the School will normally "top off" the amounts provided by the external foundations and agencies. Faculty should bear in mind that it is generally appropriate for at least three years to elapse between a faculty member's scheduled leaves.
