A Collaborative Ethnography of Leadership for Social Change: The Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition 2002-2003

This project was funded by the Ford Foundation's Leadership for a Changing World (LCW) program, administered through New York University's Robert F. Wagner School of Public Service. The CFE undertook a study of the leadership practices of two women who co-direct the Ohio Valley Environmental Coalition, Diane Bady and Janet Keating. A third awardee, Laura Forman, had died before the study began. As LCW awardees, Bady and Keating had applied for funding for an ethnographic study of their organization. The CFE won the contract for the study. Mary Hufford served as principal investigator, and Corinna McMackin, a student in the master's program at Penn's Institute for Environmental Studies, served as the research assistant. The project yielded a workshop within the region, a master's thesis, a symposium at Penn, and a final report, "Waging Democracy in the Kingdom of Coal: OVEC and the Movement for Social and Environmental Justice in Central Appalachia."
