Kurt Schwitters' literary works have often been neglected in favor of his collages in the visual arts. Yet, he applies the similar practices of montage and collage in his literary works as in the visual arts. In this workshop, I will discuss Schwitters' theory of montage and how a particular mode of attention to the materiality of print informs his works both in the visual arts and literature. There will then be the opportunity to discuss his story "Die Märchen vom Paradies," coauthored with Kate Steinitz. This work of prose combines Schwitters' imaginative poetic style with drawings by Steinitz and may serve as a test case for Schwitters' theories of montage in literature.
