Lecturer in Foreign Languages

I received my B.A. in English and Portuguese Studies from the University of Lisbon in 1999, my Master's in French and Portuguese Medieval Literature from the University of Lisbon in 2004, and my Ph.D. in Hispanic Languages and Literature with an emphasis in Medieval Studies from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2014. I have taught at the University of L'Aquila, the University of Salerno, the University of Strasbourg, and the University of California, Santa Barbara. My research focuses on medieval and early modern literature and the affinities in terms of manuscript culture between France, Castile, Galicia, Catalonia, and Portugal, more specifically the Sete Partidas by Alfonso X, the Arthurian romance, and the Crónica Geral de Espanha de 1344. At Penn I have been teaching Spanish and also literature and cinema from Brazil, Portugal, Angola, Mozambique, and Guinea-Bissau focusing on colonization, independence, minorities, race, and gender. This semester I am teaching Portuguese for Spanish Speakers and Portuguese for the Professions, and also co-teaching a graduate seminar on medieval Iberian literature. I am currently working on a textbook for first-year Portuguese classes which strives to provide an inclusionary (representation of disenfranchised groups such as LGBTQI community, women, African-Portuguese and Afro-Brazilians, low-income groups, immigrants, indigenous peoples, among others) and more real resource for learners.
