Third Nature: Early Modern Iberian Ecology and the Poetics of Pastoral
This project examines representations of ecological crisis in the pastoral literature of imperial Spain, and argues—against the conventional sense of its landscapes as gauzy, evergreen idylls—that the natural and built environments of Renaissance pastoral embody the transformations to concepts of fertility, infection, and degradation characteristic of early modernity.
