"No Man's Land", the Penn French and Italian Graduate Society's interdisciplinary conference held last Saturday, March 22nd, was a great success! Italian graduate student Andrew Korn presented a paper on "Antonioni's No Man's Land: Becoming-Land and Regenerating Thought in Zabriskie Point". Elisa Modolo and Andrea Gazzoni moderated the sessions "Representing, Performing, Transgressing Boundaries" and "Violence and the Body", respectively.

It is with great sadness that the Center for Italian Studies has learned of John Price's passing this past Saturday, February 22.  Mr. Price was the President of the America Italy Society of Philadelphia and a great supporter of the study of Italian language and culture in Philadelphia, both through AIS and through the Center for Italian Studies.

Do you think a Major in Italian Studies has little practical value? Not so. A recent report by the Association of American Colleges and Universities based on the US Census Bureau's American Community Survey (1/15/2014) shows that, over time, Liberal Arts Majors yeld a better return than supposedly more practical professional studies. The association "Globus et Locus" announces the publication of a new online magazine, "Glocalism. Journal of Politics, Culture, and Innovation", The mission of the journal is to favor n-depth studies of glocalism and the problems it raises.

The deadline to propose a manuscript in consideration for the ISSNAF – La Fondazione NY Award for the Humanities 2014 has been postponed to April 25. The award acknowledges the research of young Italian scholars in North America whose commitment to their discipline of study is innovative and honors their country of origin.

Two CILS Preparatory Courses at the B2 and C1 level will be offered again in spring 2014 by Rita Pasqui, Lecturer in Italian at the University of Pennsylvania and Cultural Officer at the Consulate General of Italy in Philadelphia.  The courses will introduce students to the CILS testing methods and offer them the opportunity to concentrate and improve on those areas of the Italian language they find most difficult in preparation for the June 5, 2014 exam.  Find all information at

Professor Fabio Finotti has been appointed to the board of the Osservatorio of the Italian Language, an organization that promotes the teaching of the Italian language and culture in the US at all levels and that was instrumental in reinstating the AP Italian Exam.

The Center for Italian Studies and the Italian Division are launching an Undergraduate Lecture Series.  The first event will be the presentation of Paola Tiberii's Dizionario delle collocazioni, Oct. 14, followed by Dave Emmi's lecture on Garibaldi's Forgotten American, Oct. 24, and by Philip Met's "Children of the Night: Childhood in Italian Horror Cinema", Nov. 14.  A final Undergraduate Lecture to be held in December will be announced.
