An intensive two-credit course covering the first and second semester of the elementary year for students who have never studied Italian before but have already fulfilled the language requirement in another modern language, preferably a romance language. Students who have fulfilled the language requirement in a language other than a romance language will be considered on an individual basis. All students must have departmental permission to register. Prerequisite: Proficiency in another foregin language. Class work emphasizes the development of spontaneous discourse skills and interactional competence. Out-of-class homework required.

Italian 112 is an accelerated elementary course for students who have never studied Italian before, but who have already fulfilled the language requirement in another language. This intensive course is the equivalent of Beginning Italian I and II combined. The class is designed to help students steadily progress along reading, writing, listening and speaking proficiency levels and gain familiarity with Italian culture. Classes are conducted in Italian and emphasize the development of communicative skills and conversational competence. Students will engage in meaningful tasks and interactive activities, inside and outside the classroom. They will be exposed to authentic cultural materials, such as films, video clips, songs, and literature. Class work will be supplemented with homework, as well as with accompanying assignments provided by the instructor. In class students will have abundant opportunities to speak as a class, in pairs, small groups, and with the instructor.
