LALSES

The Latin American and Latino Studies External Seminar series (LALSES) brings invited guests to the Penn campus, some of whom will lecture with LALS cross-listed classes, to expand and deepen our intellectual understanding of Latin America across disciplines.

The following is a list of previous and forthcoming LALSES speakers.

Spring 2017

Monday, February 20th at 12 PM - Inês Cordeiro Dias, Teaching Fellow at the University of California, Los Angeles, Spanish and Portuguese. She will speak about her research which focuses on how politics and film interact in Portuguese-speaking countries, in particular in Portugal, Brazil, Mozambique and Angola, between 1950s and 1980s. Invited by Dr. Carlos Pio.

Monday, February 27th at 2 PM - Isabella Alcañiz, Dr. Horace V. and Wilma E. Harrison Distinguished Professor in Environmental Politics and Assistant Professor in the Department of Government and Politics at the University of Maryland. She will discuss her new book, “Environmental and Nuclear Networks in the Global South: How Skills Shape International Cooperation.”

Friday, March 31st at 3:30 PM - Stephanie Kirk, Associate Professor of Spanish, Comparative Literature, and Women, Gender, and Sexuality Studies (affiliate). , Professor Kirk will give a talk for a more informed audience (LALSES) based on the first chapter of her most recent book, which studies the gender politics of the library and print in Colonial Latin America. Invited by Dr. Jorge Tellez.

Wednesday, April 5th at 2 PM - Maristella Svampa, Argentine sociologist, writer and researcher. She is the Principal Investigator of the National Council of Scientific and Technical Research(Conicet).

Tuesday, April 11th or Thursday, April 13th (TBC) at 12-1:30- Fran Ilich Morales Muñoz (Fran Ilich), artist invited by Dr. Jennifer Ponce de Leon.
