Master of Environmental Studies’ Howard Neukrug becomes one of the first Professors of Practice in the School of Arts and Sciences

By Susan Ahlborn

Howard Neukrug was recently appointed as Professor of Practice in the Department of Earth and Environmental Science for his contributions to Philadelphia’s green infrastructure initiatives. During his time as the CEO of the Philadelphia Water Department, Howard established the $2.5 billion Green City, Clean Waters program, which became a blueprint for water resource management and sustainability for cities across the nation.

Under this new title, Howard is creating Penn’s Center for Water Science, Technology and Policy. This new enterprise will connect water-related research throughout schools across the University to businesses and organizations who can apply Penn’s findings. Howard adds, “It amazed me to see how the theoretical research that occurs at Penn matches with the applied research needs that I have had my whole life as a water utility manager.”

Master of Environmental Studies Director Dr. Yvette Bordeaux adds, “Howard is bringing incredible opportunities for interdisciplinary research to Penn. Faculty and students from fields as diverse as geology, planning, policy, law and business will be able to collaborate on projects that can make real-world differences right here in Philadelphia as well as around the world.”
