Two College Juniors are 2022 Goldwater Scholars
College juniors Allison Chou and Andrew Sontag are among five Penn undergraduates who received 2022 Goldwater Scholarships, which are awarded to sophomores or juniors planning research careers in mathematics, engineering, or the natural sciences. More than 1,200 students were nominated by 433 academic institutions in the United States to compete for this year’s awards.
A neuroscience major from Needham, Massachusetts, Chou is a University Scholar, teaching assistant, founder of Penn Chinese Calligraphy, and operations director at TEDxPenn. She plans to pursue an M.D./Ph.D. in neuroscience.
Sontag is a Benjamin Franklin Scholar majoring in physics and astronomy. His research project with the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory concerning charged particle interactions near Saturn resulted in a recent publication. He is site coordinator for the Penn Music Mentoring Program. Sontag, from Elkridge, Maryland, plans to pursue a Ph.D. in physics.
