Jeffery Arsenault received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the Department for the Study of Religion at the University of Toronto. His Master's thesis was an analysis and discussion of the narrative strategies employed by Ruzbihan Baqli in his text The Unveiling of Secrets. His dissertation research at the University of Pennsylvania concerns early Sufi manuals (10th - 11th c. CE), focusing on the function, form, content, and rhetoric of these works and their role as material semiotic objects caught up in complex networks of textual, social, and ideological significance. He is particularly interested in issues of genre, canonicity, intertextuality, the elaboration of standards, and the role of quotation and definition in relation to the production and reception of these early works of Sufi discourse. Much like the rest of you, he occasionally makes eating and sleeping happen.
