Rogers Smith, a leading scholar in constitutional law and American political thought, has been named the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished Professor of Political Science. Smith was recruited from Yale, where he is codirector of the Center for the Study of Race, Inequality, and Politics, part of the university’s Institute for Social and Policy Studies. "He is an outstanding teacher," said Dean Preston, "someone very committed to teaching." Mary Summers, his wife, will also leave Yale to become a senior lecturer in the Fox Leadership Program.

Star Child

George Crumb, the Annenberg Professor Emeritus of the Humanities, was awarded a Grammy in February for his composition Star-Child, from the 70th Birthday Album. The Grammy Award was for the best classical contemporary composition. "I think he has a unique voice," noted music professor Jay Reise, a former student of Crumb. "His spiritual message is very strong. His music is beautiful." Crumb, who taught at Penn for 32 years, also won a Pulitzer Prize in 1968 for Echoes of Time and the River.
