New Faculty Face
Rogers Smith, a leading scholar in constitutional law and American
political thought, has been named the Christopher H. Browne Distinguished
Professor of Political Science. Smith was recruited from Yale, where he
is codirector of the Center for the Study of Race, Inequality, and Politics,
part of the universitys Institute for Social and Policy Studies.
"He is an outstanding teacher," said Dean Preston, "someone
very committed to teaching." Mary Summers, his wife, will also leave
Yale to become a senior lecturer in the Fox Leadership Program.
Star Child
George Crumb, the Annenberg Professor Emeritus of the Humanities,
was awarded a Grammy in February for his composition Star-Child,
from the 70th Birthday Album. The Grammy Award was for the best
classical contemporary
composition. "I think he has a unique voice," noted music professor
Jay Reise, a former student of Crumb. "His spiritual message is very
strong. His music is beautiful." Crumb, who taught at Penn for 32
years, also won a Pulitzer Prize in 1968 for Echoes of Time and the
River.
