Leadership Lessons

A new and unique curricular initiative on leadership is underway in SAS. Penn trustee Robert Fox, C'52, has made a $10 million gift to the College to establish the Robert A. Fox Leadership Program. "Leadership roles require skills as diverse as the arts and sciences themselves," said Dean Samuel Preston. "The Fox Leadership Program will offer students a wonderful opportunity to develop skills that complement their liberal arts education and prepare them for a lifetime of achievement."

In the fall, a non-credit course, Lessons in Leadership, will allow students to meet and talk with alumni leaders from a number of fields. All College freshmen will take part in the program soon after their arrival, and small groups of College students will meet with leaders from business, politics, academia, the arts, and public service in a series of structured and interactive sessions throughout the year. An innovative curriculum will develop speaking skills and provide practical leadership experience in the community. Each year there will be a public lecture by a world leader in politics or from another professional field. Two of the three new Fox Leadership Professors will be John DiIulio, a member of Princeton's faculty who will join Penn's Political Science Department, and Martin Seligman of Penn's Psychology Department.
