Coming Up: SAS Alumni Weekend Events

The Future of the State of Israel

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the State of Israel, SAS and the Center for Judaic Studies are looking ahead at what the future may hold for the Jewish state. Two panel discussions will examine important issues facing Israel. "Politics and Israel" will feature Ian Lustick, chair of Political Science; H. Michael Neiditch, C'68, president of the Jerusalem Foundation Inc.; and Denise Sondra Wolf, C'92. "Jewish Identities in the Contemporary World" will feature Rabbi Howard Alpert, executive director of Hillel; and Beth Wenger, CJS'97, Katz Family Assistant Professor of American Jewish History. These events will be held on Friday, May 15, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. in the Hillel Auditorium, 202 South 36th Street. College Alumni Society Annual Meeting

Designer Babies

SAS and the School of Nursing are presenting an alumni/faculty exchange on "Designer Babies." Panelists will discuss what the human race has to gain -- and lose -- from genetic engineering, and what every person who considers having children should know about genetic medicine. Featured speakers are Catherine S. Magid, MBioethics'99, M'00; Glenn McGee, Ph.D., assistant professor of Bioethics and author of The Perfect Baby: A Pragmatic Approach to Genetics; and Joyce E. Thompson, DrPH, CNM, FAAN, director of the Graduate Program in Nurse Midwifery. This exchange will be held on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. in the Benjamin Franklin Room, Houston Hall, 3417 Spruce Street.
